Devlog #48 - Dekamara Roadmap
Hello everyone! After the release of v0.4, we decided to focus on finishing the Guide for the upcoming update, and finish this Dekarama game. But before diving into our plans, I want to talk about what happened since we changed our Itch page pricing.
As you may know, we were using ‘individual price’ for the full game, and the project was technically ‘free’. After I noticed that people have to pay from scratch each time I upload a new file with this option selected, I changed it and made the project priced. Which impacted our visibility on the store incredibly.
I modified our Itch page from free to priced on May 10. You can see how our views and downloads nose-dived instantly.
And that showed me how competitive the market is and also how hard it is to sell a project on any store without any marketing. We were doing quite fine when the project was in the ‘free’ category, so I’m going to add our free demo separately and direct people to the full project from there and pray for its success. For reference, Itch alone earned us more than Patreon+DLSite income before going into the ‘priced’ category.
With that said, v0.5 is going to introduce the last character, Guide. I couldn’t add new maps to this version since new mechanics were going to be introduced in those maps, and we decided to not to rush Guide and finish Pets instead. We are going to finish the Guide, add new maps and consider this game done. I don’t plan on any increase to the price on Itch, since I believe 4$ is okay for this game. After its full release, we want to release the game on Steam as well, but since preparing store assets is going to take a while, it might be hard on us financially so this might have to wait for a while. We decided to make this a separate game because we are going to change it a lot. I still haven't decided on a name yet so let’s just call it Dekamara 2 for now. Here is what we’ve decided about Dekamara 2 so far:
We are going to add a Town, where all the NPCs will gather. Players will go through different stages from there, rescue town NPCs and complete their quests afterwards. Quest rewards will vary, players are going to be able to unlock new abilities for Dekamara by completing quests for example. Some quests will just unlock new scenes. With each NPCs rescued, new buildings will be available with their own NPC and you can visit them in their own private room inside.
We are planning on 4 different biomes, each with 4 levels and 4 unique enemies. Each level is going to have some metroidvania elements, with permanently unlockable shortcuts. Players will have to revisit these levels as they get stronger to proceed further with each attempt.
Each girl will drop special collectables, which will act as materials when trading with town NPCs. Some NPCs will offer permanent upgrades, some will offer temporary ones. There will be a ‘training’ room where a cult member servant can collect material from a girl of your choice while you are on a quest.
Nothing is set in stone yet, we might still decide to do thing differently and we want to hear your ideas too! I'll keep you updated, take care!

That's fascinating... makes sense if I'm honest. Having used Itchio for a decent bit of time a lot of players expect things to be free to at least try. But I've also noticed how games that do have a price tag to it often get lost when searching for it since it gets categorized slightly. That's probably why it fell as hard as it did. That and the barrier to entry though small, turned off a decent bit of people. Granted I still paid a price for the at the time, v0.306 and if I have to pay the full price again when it does finish I'll be fine with it. The ideas of a sequel/true title following up on what's being developed here sound great. You guys have been working hard and to see it financially suffer saddens me. If I wasn't following the project I probably would've missed out on the latest updates. Once some proper time comes available I'll be commenting on v0.4 and providing a good bit of feedback. Been busy these past few weeks and hadn't had much time to enjoy games as of late. Looking forward to further development and glad to have supported in some way. I'd say getting the game on Steam will definitely widen the potential audience since it has quite a number of hungry metroidvania fans though the competition there is much more fierce than on itchio. Best of luck to you both in getting this game off the ground and any future projects that come to materialize. I hope things improve.
Thanks for the support! Fortunately releasing demo separately got us back on track fast. I agree that things are going to be lot harder on Steam if we ever make it, but I'm sure it'll be much better than Kalyzmyr.
No idea what that is but I have great hope that you guys are going to be able to finish it. Even if it needs a delay or just a bit more time I trust you guys bring great quality to this game and its potential sequel. Hope you both are well.
Hi there, been following this project in the background. Sad to hear what occurred, I agree with your decision to make this split of the game (if I understand that correctly as to what is occurring) so you can financially continue. This market is highly competitive as you said thus I do suggest you try to branch out to other platforms along side Itchio via Steam or DLsite if possible. I even suggest personally posting on some pirate forums that have Devs working there as some allow for Devs to enforce rules such as no pirate links within the first 30 days. Hopefully if you do so you'll end up with gaining more attention especially as a good H-action side-scroller game is hard to come by.
I personally plan to await a full release before purchasing the game myself and will continue to watch and wait for it. (it was hard to read this all due to the background having black bits in it, so I suggest adding a white middle bit or something so the black text is on something contrasting it)
PS the image I think is broken that you're trying to show.

Making the demo separate title worked, even though it's hasn't been a day. I agree about the pirate forums, unfortunately I don't know much about them but I guess should spend some time on that.
Thanks for the feedback, I added transparent white background, hopefully it'll make it easier to read and re-uploaded the image.
